Drew McIntyre Wants A Dream Match With John Cena
- WWE
Drew McIntyre has yet to face John Cena one-on-one, but if the former gets it his way, a marquee showdown between the two stars will take place in the not-so-distant future.
McIntyre and Cena have squared off in several tag team bouts over the years. And they both competed in a fatal four-way match — along with Finn Bálor and Baron Corbin – on the Jan. 14, 2019 episode of Monday Night Raw to determine the No. 1 contender for Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. That match was won by Balor.
With McIntyre now established as a top main event superstar, a dream match with Cena looks all the more intriguing. And it sounds like the 16-time World Champion could be back on WWE programming before long.
Speaking on a T-Mobile Center video (h/t Sportskeeda) McIntyre listed The Undertaker and John Cena as his dream WrestleMania 39 (scheduled to take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas) opponents. But with the former now retired from professional wrestling, the wrestler-turned-actor is obviously a more realistic opponent for the Show of Shows.
“If I had to pick a dream opponent, like I always say, The Undertaker. Even though he’s probably ridden into the sunset, as we saw in the Last Ride documentary. I wrestled him when I was about 24 when I was The Chosen One, undefeated. He handed me my first loss.
But if we’re going Hollywood, Rock would be the obvious choice (as a dream opponent), but I kind of want to see Rock and Roman, so I’ll take Cena since he’s kind of gone Hollywood. It would be a great story. Absolutely, I like it.”
The Undertaker defeated McIntyre in a singles match on the March 19, 2020 episode of SmackDown. At Extreme Rules 2019, Undertaker and Roman Reigns teamed up in a winning effort against McIntyre and Shane McMahon. Even if he doesn’t get The Undertaker at WrestleMania 39, McIntyre at least had the opportunity face him one-on-one early in his WWE tenure.
WrestleMania 39 Would Be Perfect
It’s widely expected that Reigns will face The Rock at WrestleMania 39. Speaking of Reigns, the rumor is that he will headline SummerSlam 2021 (Aug. 21) against Cena.
If those two matches happen, then the opportunity is wide open to run McIntyre vs. Cena at WrestleMania 39. The former is one of the few major stars that Cena has never faced one-on-one, and it’s the perfect chance for WWE to finally run the marquee bout.
