Drew McIntyre Explains Why He's Not Ready For A Rematch With Roman Reigns

  hollywood

It's been almost a full year since Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns put on a classic in the main event of Survivor Series 2020, which saw The Tribal Chief beat the then-WWE Champion.

Fans knew that a rematch would have to wait a while, as both superstars competed on opposite brands. However, both Reigns and McIntyre were selected by SmackDown in last month's WWE Draft, which now opens the door for a long-awaited rematch or two down the road.

If McIntyre gets his way, however, a rematch with the current Universal Champion will wait a while longer.

During an interview with Sky Sports (h/t Bleacher Report), McIntyre admitted that a rematch with Reigns feels inevitable. However, the 36-year-old McIntyre stressed patience and the desire to build up more "momentun" before he squares off with Reigns again.

"Everyone keeps saying to me, ‘It’s Drew and Roman, that is obviously what will happen.' I am sure it is inevitably going to happen, but I have no desire for it to happen right now. He has got all this momentum and I am a very patient man. I have been in the wrestling game for over 20 years now. I want to keep building up victories.

I want to keep building up momentum. He is aware of what I am capable of these days, and I want him to have to watch me build up momentum and when the time is right we come together. It will definitely be a huge match for us as Superstars but especially for the fans. Not until the time is right, though."

Reigns will go one-on-one with WWE Champion Big E at Survivor Series 2021 in 12 days. As for McIntyre, he will represent Team SmackDown — along with King Woods, Happy Corbin, Sami Zayn and Jeff Hardy — in the annual men's 5-on-5 elimination tag match. They'll go up against Team Raw which consists of Kevin Owens, Rey Mysterio, Bobby Lashley, Finn Balor and Seth Rollins.

So a potential feud between Reigns and McIntyre theoretically won't happen until the end of Survivor Series at the earliest. For what it's worth, WWE is reportedly planning another match between Reigns and longtime rival Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 weekend in Arlington, Texas.

McIntyre vs. Reigns Will Happen Eventually

There's a lack of strong main event babyfacees on the SmackDown roster, so that obviously bodes well for McIntyre and his chances of facing Reigns again. WWE could theoretically run this program again before WrestleMania, if the plan is in fact to have Lesnar face The Tribal Chief at the Show of Shows. One way or another, it's safe to say that McIntyre eventually will get his rematch with Reigns.
